The Oxidized Flavour Standard is used to assess tasters’ ability to detect and recognize the off-notes of oxygen-exposed products, such as beer. It represents flat, old, aged, grape-like, and sherry-like flavours that can occur in beer at a specific oxidation profile. The taints mainly occur in beer due to oxygen interaction in the finished packaged product.
Oxygen generates free radicals that begin to interact with the beer – either releasing stabilized flavours (from sulphur complexes) or degrading flavours within the beer to generate off-notes.

Cause of Oxidized Beer Flavour
Beer oxidation flavour develops in beer due to oxygen interaction in the finished packaged product. Oxygen generates free radicals that begin to interact with the beer – either releasing stabilised flavours (from sulphur complexes) or degrading flavours within the beer to generate off-notes.
This flavour is typical of fresh packaged lager and beer that has oxidised within the first few weeks of packaging.
How To Taste
The best way to evaluate Oxidized Beer Flavour is to cover the glass with your hand and swirl it to release the aroma. Then, remove your hand and take a long sniff. Repeat as necessary.

Industry leading packaging and shelf-life
FlavorActiV flavour standards are blister packaged, which extends shelf-life and protects capsules from potential contamination. The average shelf-life of FlavorActiV flavour standards is 18 months to 4 years, depending on the flavour compounds.
We will never ship in pots or plastic packaging, here’s why…
Blister packaging protects capsules from the environment until they are ready for use. Blister packaging greatly reduces the amount of headspace for possible flavour escape. As each capsule individually blister packaged, making use of one capsule still leaves all others protected. FlavorActiV Flavour Standard packaging is 100% recyclable, as opposed to polypropylene which is not widely recycled.
Pots are semi-porous, they allow molecules to pass through and flavour to be lost, their significant headspace also adds to substantial flavour escape as a gas, even when using just one capsule all those remaining in the pot are exposed.
